“Good.” Maren sounded pleased with his willingness to accept that she talked to her stuffed animal. In fact, she looked exceedingly happy. “So… do you believe that I’m your little sister now that you’ve met me?” she asked, a little sheepishly. She was actually afraid that he still wasn’t going to believe her…
Johan wasn’t entirely expecting the sudden shift in her tone when she asked that, but he gave her a small smile nonetheless. Honestly, he felt like he had no choice but to accept this, as if the evidence was severely stacked against him, but there was probably a much gentler way to phrase that.
“How could I not?” he replied. That felt pretty adequate, though he was still having a little bit of trouble coming to terms with it.
At his words, Maren’s face brightened instantly, and a moment later she was hugging him tightly. “I knew you’d believe me!” she proclaimed loudly, despite her earlier obvious misgivings. “Because I knew you were just like the big brother I always, always wanted!”
She let go of him almost as quickly as she had grabbed onto him and began to bounce in place. “So that means I can stay with you, right?”
